The hosts of the 2019 Mascom Event were eager to present the top champions in the various sports that they sponsored. The Mascom brand has always supported football, volleyball, horse racing, and chess in their hope of promoting sportsmanship, healthy living, and a sense of camaraderie among players, particularly in the country of Botswana. Members and leaders from the private sector, which also helped make the event possible, were invited and allowed to speak and share what their dreams are for the improvement and continued success of sporting tournaments yearly. The event highlighted the importance of supporting local sports in the community.

Crime Reduction

There are a lot of factors that influence crime rates, especially among the youth, and supporting local sports, can help alleviate some of its main elements. Boredom and neglect, among other risk factors, provide opportunities for the young to behave delinquently. Most local sports are done after school hours, and this occupies the spare time of young kids and teens. It’s a healthy alternative, which also is a good outlet for their energy rather than picking fights. Being in a sports team may also mean building new friendships that, in turn, will decrease antisocial behavior seen in many of the young nowadays. With proper supervision and role modeling, local sports among the youth will enable them to live a positive lifestyle.

 Enhances Health.

Regularly engaging in sports among the youth is important for their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The WHO suggests that children and teens should engage in moderate to vigorous exercise every day for an hour or longer to reap long-term positive effects. Some of these benefits include healthy weight, reduced depression and anxiety, prevention of diabetes and high blood pressure, and cardiorespiratory fitness.

Builds Community.

Engaging in local sports in one’s community encourages civic participation, particularly in facilities that are connected to libraries and other resources in the community. Mentorship is beneficial for both the mentor and the student and may serve as a guide in establishing positive role models and other relationships. Playing sports holds the community together, increasing social connections and meaningful bonds.
